No Time to Explain

Indie-rock band “Good Kid” reached out to me and sent an unreleased song for me to animate to. After a month of work, it was released at the same time as the song and received amazing feedback.

No Time to Explain

My “No Time To Explain” animation was the first animation I got to work on that featured an unreleased song. Good Kid, an indie-rock band based in Toronto CA, messaged me on Instagram asking about a potential opportunity for me as an animator. I had already used a different song of theirs in another video prior to this one, which gained a ton of traction on Instagram and Youtube. After some discussing, they sent me the mastered audio file for NTTE and told me I could animate whatever I wanted to it. I happily accepted and began planning my video, the story, and backgrounds. The whole 1 minute and 14 second animation took me about a month to complete from start to finish.

One of the things I achieved with this video was hitting certain beats when it came to the song and the story. The story I was going with featured Ash very obviously be in denial about being flustered when interacting with Z. The song talks about similar themes: coming to terms with finally wanting love/a relationship after a long time being alone. On the night the video and song released, I was invited to speak to the band in their Discord server during a listening party. There were more than 200 people on call and they shared my animation when it premiered on Youtube. Their feedback afterward was beyond heartwarming and inspiring! The vocalist of the band, Nick Frosst, shared how there were alot of themes that were interpreted very well in the animation. The whole experience was surreal and I couldn’t have asked for a better band to work with.

Here is the reaction video that one of the server members screen-recorded during the listening party. The part where I talk to the group starts at 44:43!
