First Rate Town

First Rate Town

Similar to “No Time To Explain”, I received “First Rate Town” a month in advance as an unreleased song! It easily became one of my favourite songs from Good Kid’s discography.

I love the concept that I created for this video. I was loosely inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and how Miles Morales customized super cool “Hello, My name is:” stickers and stuck them wherever he went. For a while, I was struggling on a story that incorporated these stickers. I remember the day the story finally hit me was when I was the washing dishes. I ran back to my room and started storyboarding as fast as I could.

The story I went with has a lot more interaction between Ash and Z which was one of the goals I set for myself. I animated them acting and showing their individual personalities too. I also spent a lot of time on the backgrounds/layout for this animation and tried keeping them as consistent as possible from the way they were coloured to the size relationship between the elements. The last goal I had was to make it cinematic with nice compositions and lighting, which I achieved in Harmony using various blending modes and compositing tools.
